Abstract
The Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of sites in Adelaide. The project was funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Family Services. The Periodic Survey provides a snapshot of sexual and HIV-related practices among gay and homosexually active men. This report describes the data from the initial Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey. Sample Population: 552 gay and homosexually-active men from Adelaide. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Kind of Data: Survey.Sampling Procedures: Men were recruited through: gay-community venues, sexual health clinics, and the Picnic in the Park. This second survey was conducted in November 1999. The project was funded by the Department of Human Services, South Australia. Sample Population: 463 gay and homosexually-active men from Adelaide. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Sampling Procedures: Men were recruited through: gay-community venues, gay sex-on-premises venues, and the Picnic in the Park. Gay Community Periodic Survey: Adelaide 2010

The Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men. From the first survey in 1998, the project has been funded by the South Australian Department of Health and implemented in collaboration with the AIDS Council of South Australia. The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men. Up until recently the survey has been conducted every two years, but in 2010 it was agreed that recruitment would occur annually to improve monitoring and reporting. Sample Population: 1,036 gay and homosexually-active men from Adelaide. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. The Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey data results from a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on types of sexual relationships and number of partners, anal and oral intercourse, unprotected anal intercourse, testing for HIV and other STIs, HIV serostatus, recreational drug use, and demographic characteristics such as sexual identity and age.Sample Population: 709 gay and homosexually-active men from Adelaide. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Kind of Data: Survey.Sampling Procedures: Men were recruited through twelve data collection sites: the Festival ‘hub’, Higher Ground, and Picnic in the Park, gay social venues, sex-on-premises venues and sexual health clinics. Gay Community Periodic Survey Data: Adelaide 2001

The third Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing practice and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to gay community, recreational drug use, and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. Additional questions were included in the 2001 survey to address frequency of attendance at gay commerical venues, places at which unprotected anal intercourse with casual partners occurred, participants'' knowledge of their casual partners HIV status, and any drug use and injecting drug use. Kind of Data: Survey. Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited through six sites in Adelaide as well as at a large public gay community event, Picnic in the Park. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Sample Population: 810 men in Adelaide were asked to complete the questionnaire and 565 did so. Gay Community Periodic Surveys surveys are regularly conducted in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Adelaide and Perth to monitor changes in sexual and other risk practices over time among Australian gay men who are gay community attached, recruited from gay sex-on-premises venues, social sites and clinics.
