Abstract
The Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey data results from a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on types of sexual relationships and number of partners, anal and oral intercourse, unprotected anal intercourse, testing for HIV and other STIs, HIV serostatus, recreational drug use, and demographic characteristics such as sexual identity and age.Sample Population: 709 gay and homosexually-active men from Adelaide. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Kind of Data: Survey.Sampling Procedures: Men were recruited through twelve data collection sites: the Festival ‘hub’, Higher Ground, and Picnic in the Park, gay social venues, sex-on-premises venues and sexual health clinics. The Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited during the Adelaide Feast Festival (particularly the Festival ‘hub’, Higher Ground, and Picnic in the Park) and from gay social venues, sex-on-premises venues and sexual health clinics. Sample Population: gay and homosexually-active men from Adelaide. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Kind of Data: Survey. The second Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing practice and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to gay community, recreational drug use, and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Kind of Data: Survey. Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited through five sites in the Adelaide area as well as at a large public gay community event, Picnic in the Park. Slightly more than half the men were recruited at the Picnic in the Park. Gay Community Periodic Survey Data: Adelaide 2001

The third Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing practice and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to gay community, recreational drug use, and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. Additional questions were included in the 2001 survey to address frequency of attendance at gay commerical venues, places at which unprotected anal intercourse with casual partners occurred, participants'' knowledge of their casual partners HIV status, and any drug use and injecting drug use. Kind of Data: Survey. Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited through six sites in Adelaide as well as at a large public gay community event, Picnic in the Park. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Sample Population: 810 men in Adelaide were asked to complete the questionnaire and 565 did so. The fourth Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing practice and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to gay community, recreational drug use, and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. Additional questions were included in the 2003 survey to address the issues of using the internet to find sex partners, sexual health testing, drug use and injecting drug use. Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited through six sites in Adelaide as well as at a large public gay community event, Picnic in the Park. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Sample Population: 1127 men were asked to complete the questionnaire and 834 did so. This represented a sound response rate of 74%. The fifth Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and other homosexually active men recruited at a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to gay community, recreational drug use and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. Additional questions were included in the 2005 survey to address the issues of the frequency of sexual health testing, drug use and injecting drug use, current knowledge of HIV transmission and the rate of HIV infection. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited through six sites in Adelaide as well as at a large public gay community event, Picnic in the Park. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Sample Population: 811 men were asked to complete the questionnaire and 629 did so. This represented a sound response rate of 71%. The Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. The project was funded by the South Australian Department of Health and implemented in collaboration with the AIDS Council of South Australia. The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men.
