Abstract
The Canberra Gay Community Periodic Survey is a repeated cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through gay community sites in Canberra. The major aim of the survey was to provide data on sexual practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay and homosexually active men. The 2006 survey was the third gay community periodic survey to be conducted in Canberra. This survey was similar to the previous surveys in that it was conducted at the same time of the year and employed the same recruitment strategies. Kind of Data: Survey data. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Sample Population: 282 gay and homosexually-active men from Canberra. Sampling Procedures: Participants were recruited at SpringOUT Festival Fair Day, and two gay community venues. 389 men were asked to complete the survey and 282 did so. Gay Community Periodic Survey: Canberra 2000
Dataset
The aim of this survey was to gather data on levels of safe and unsafe sexual practice in a broad cross-sectional sample of gay and homosexually active men. Men were recruited at four gay community events held in Canberra in 2000. The survey included questions on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to the gay community and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. Kind of Data: Survey. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Sample Population: 350 gay and homosexually-active men from Canberra. Sampling Procedures: Participants were recruited at a number of gay community events in Canberra: Fair Day, one gay community site and two gay community events. 407 men were asked to complete the survey and 350 did so. Gay Community Periodic Survey: Canberra 2003

The Gay Community Periodic Survey data records levels of safe and unsafe sexual practice in a broad cross-sectional sample of gay and homosexually active men. Men were recruited at gay community events and venues in Canberra in 2003. Survey questions focused on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing practice and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to gay community, recreational drug use and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. In the main, to facilitate as direct a comparison as possible, the questions asked in 2003 were the same as those asked in the previous survey; however, some additional questions were included in the 2003 survey to address issues of using the internet to find sex partners, sexual health testing, and drug use and injecting drug use. Kind of Data: Survey. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Sample Population: 255 gay and homosexually-active men from Canberra. Sampling Procedures: Participants were recruited at SpringOUT Festival Fair Day, and two gay community venues. 307 men were asked to complete the survey and 255 did so. The Canberra Gay Community Periodic Survey data results from a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Canberra. Data were collected on types of sexual relationships and number of partners, anal and oral intercourse, unprotected anal intercourse, testing for HIV and other STIs, HIV serostatus, recreational drug use, and demographic characteristics such as sexual identity and age. Sample Population: 270 gay and homosexually-active men from Canberra. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Kind of Data: Survey. Sampling Procedures: Men were recruited the Canberra springOUT Festival Fair Day, gay social venues, a sex-on-premises venue and a sexual health clinic. Gay Community Periodic Surveys surveys are regularly conducted in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Adelaide and Perth to monitor changes in sexual and other risk practices over time among Australian gay men who are gay community attached, recruited from gay sex-on-premises venues, social sites and clinics.
