Abstract
This thesis aims to find out to what extent and efficacy the latest information and
communication technology (ICT) tools such as intranet, emails, data warehousing
and search engines support knowledge management (KM) in an organization. It
investigated the use of mobiles in mobile working environments and incorporated
mobile knowledge management (MKM) into the study. Human resource (HR)
aspects of employee involvement, training and development and organization
structure were also considered.
The conceptual model was adopted from discussing the technology pillar of Michael
Stankosky’s four pillar model for KM. The empirical study consisted of an Australiawide
online survey and six interviews. Interviews were either face to face or via
telephone. The quantitative data was analysed with partial least square method using
SmartPLS software. Qualitative data was analysed using NVivo. The study also
examined the relationship of KM and performance.
The survey results indicated the relationship of considered ICT tools and HR factors
with KM and their influence on performance. Qualitative analysis emphasised the
advancement of intranet as a working platform and importance of emails as a
communication method. Due to low survey response rate, the relationship of
organization structures and KM could not be verified.
The paper researched the holistic view of KM with ICT developments and
incorporated MKM which is new to the KM domain. Organizations could benefit by
the study through identifying the importance of KM and implementing KM projects
relating to ICT.
