Abstract
As ubiquitous technologies today reconfigure language and modes of communication, a new contemporary shorthand is materialising. Mediated language text and subtext morphs towards the image, and becomes intrinsically linked with technology, a domain where new meanings and interpretations are developed. This exegesis aims to deliver a re-reading of this intersection in a historical context, focusing primarily on how emerging technologies have shaped language, and the contribution and response of artists to this relationship. Taking the work of Kurt Schwitters as a touchstone for exploratory processes, the research provides an area of investigation that informs and enriches my own practice. My studio work pursues a contemporary approach to collage with respect to the grid and the pixel, extending towards painting and digital printing. Technology, herein, forms the basis for an expanded notion of language in the context of the mutable propagation of the digital image in creative and contemporary art.
