Abstract
This written component of my MFA aims to elucidate the current position of my art practice. It joins ideas from diverse cultural and historical frameworks, mapping their connections and interactions as slippages, overlaps, or spaces in between. Fluctuation between different contexts for interpreting images and objects presented in my work widens scope for meaning, and creates a form of hybridity that is discussed as culturally mediating, generative and transformative. Metaphors reiterating this idea of connection are repeated in the motifs of my work, such as the journey, tunnels and the cave. Borderline areas, crossing between science and mysticism, knowledge and belief, reality and illusion for example, are discussed as having the potential to author new fictions, to go beyond the world as it is presently familiar and known to us. Such invention is frequently explored in this paper as occurring in the mind, as an idea of the landscape for instance, or in the remembered myth or imagining process drawn upon when reading or finding images. It is my intention that an investigation connecting such diverse and disparate elements, while not definitive, opens up possibility and plurality in the conceptual contextualization of my work and suggests potential avenues for my future practice.
