Abstract
Development of ceramic particle reinforced aluminium metal matrix composites (MMCs) has recently resulted in advanced engineering materials for potential use in structural applications in aerospace, automobile and marine industries. In the present paper we have reported the corrosion behaviour of Al-Si-Mg-SiCp MMCs with minor alloying additions of scandium in the elemental state. The composites were prepared by mechanical alloying through a powder metallurgy route. Corrosion investigations were carried out in different levels of salinity and at variable values of pH using electrochemical techniques and immersion tests. Evaluated corrosion parameters are correlated with studies of metallurgical thermodynamics and surface morphology. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
