Res' onance-Body [Box]

Abstract

The wide range of contexts in which design is situated demands sophisticated analysis of collaboration for the design to be developed, produced and delivered to the market place. In utilizing light bank technology (traditionally employed in the context of entertainment) in ways that advance the technology’s potential application, this research collaboration explores the complex and subjective relationship between the object and the viewer.

Through the use of biofeedback technology in Res'onance-Body [Box], the audience are invited to participate in the creation of the environmental soundscape. By extending the tactile, structural and psychological sensations arising from the biofeedback sounds and lighting, sensations will be emitted creating a space for gentle kinaesthetic exploration and meditation. The innovative nature of this research opens up the potential to move beyond the art space; the work’s therapeutic focus offers the possibility for an engagement with certain care environments such as hospitals and aged care facilities.

The work was exhibited at Gallery Barry Keldoulis as part of the Sydney Esquisse Design and Art Festival 2003. It awarded two first prizes for best-in-category for the festival exhibition themes of No place like it and Mother Love.
