(1983) Burchill, SandraThesisModern criticism and scholarship on the novels of Jane Austen owe much to the cumulative body of critical thought which has been established over a period of approximately one hundred and seventy years. Although in recent times some light has been shed on aspects of the educative process in Austen's novels, on the whole, the area of female education has remained in relative darkness, with few critics paying it more than a cursory tribute. This thesis proposes firstly to provide a brief survey of the critical literature and trends in the criticism of Jane Austen from the nineteenth century to the present time. It will then examine each novel in the light of the historical background to the question of education for young ladies in the eighteenth century; a question long neglected by many Austen scholars.
