Abstract
The seventh Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Sample Population: 970 gay and homosexually-active men from Adelaide. Kind of Data: Survey. Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited during the Adelaide Feast Festival (particularly the Festival ‘hub’, Higher Ground, and Picnic in the Park) and from gay social venues, sex-on-premises venues and sexual health clinics. http://csrh.arts.unsw.edu.au/research/publications/gcps/

The second Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing practice and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to gay community, recreational drug use, and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Kind of Data: Survey. Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited through five sites in the Adelaide area as well as at a large public gay community event, Picnic in the Park. Slightly more than half the men were recruited at the Picnic in the Park. The fourth Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing practice and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to gay community, recreational drug use, and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. Additional questions were included in the 2003 survey to address the issues of using the internet to find sex partners, sexual health testing, drug use and injecting drug use. Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited through six sites in Adelaide as well as at a large public gay community event, Picnic in the Park. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Sample Population: 1127 men were asked to complete the questionnaire and 834 did so. This represented a sound response rate of 74%. The fifth Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and other homosexually active men recruited at a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on anal intercourse and oral sex, the use of condoms, the nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing and serostatus, aspects of social attachment to gay community, recreational drug use and a range of demographic items including sexual identity, age, education, occupation and ethnicity. Additional questions were included in the 2005 survey to address the issues of the frequency of sexual health testing, drug use and injecting drug use, current knowledge of HIV transmission and the rate of HIV infection. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Sampling Procedures: Respondents were recruited through six sites in Adelaide as well as at a large public gay community event, Picnic in the Park. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Sample Population: 811 men were asked to complete the questionnaire and 629 did so. This represented a sound response rate of 71%. The sixth Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of gay community sites in Adelaide. Data were collected on types of sexual relationships and number of partners, anal and oral intercourse, unprotected anal intercourse, testing for HIV and other STIs, HIV serostatus, recreational drug use, as well as demographic characteristics such as sexual identity and age. Time Dimensions: Repeated cross-sectional study. Sampling Procedures: Convenience sample. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Participants were recruited through sites in the Adelaide area as well as from gay social venues, gay sex-on-premises venues, sexual health clinics and Picnic in the Park. Kind of Data: Survey. The Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited through a range of sites in Adelaide. The project was funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Family Services. The Periodic Survey provides a snapshot of sexual and HIV-related practices among gay and homosexually active men. This report describes the data from the initial Adelaide Gay Community Periodic Survey. Sample Population: 552 gay and homosexually-active men from Adelaide. Method of Data Collection: Self-completion. Kind of Data: Survey.Sampling Procedures: Men were recruited through: gay-community venues, sexual health clinics, and the Picnic in the Park. The project was funded by the Department of Human Services, South Australia. The Periodic Survey provides a snapshot of sexual and HIV-related practices among gay and homosexually active men.
