UNSWorks, a UNSW Library service for Schools, Centres and Institutes of the University, is an online institutional repository of UNSW research output. Repository content can be searched and accessed on the web, by other researchers and by the public.
UNSWorks aims to enhance the value and impact of UNSW research by making it more visible and accessible globally, free of charge. It is part of an international movement to enhance scholarly research communication by establishing a system of open access and interoperable repositories for curation of research material. In addition to making UNSW research more visible and accessible, UNSWorks assists researchers and academics with managing their research material by providing a stable and enduring home for the their research output. It also enables researchers to meet recommendations of funding bodies, including ARC and NHMRC, to deposit research publications in an institutional or subject-based repository. UNSWorks meets the Library's purpose to deliver professional services to optimise the University's investment in our digital and print collection that improve outcomes in research.
UNSWorks was developed as part of the ARROW (Australian Research Repositories Online to the World) Project, which ran from 2004 to 2008. The ARROW Project identified and tested software and solutions to support best practice institutional digital repositories comprising e-prints, electronic theses, e-research and electronic publishing. It aimed to provide a vehicle for higher education institutions in Australia to transform the way they manage their research publications, such as articles, conference papers, theses, and research information such as small-size digital collections, in order to improve output and impact.
The ARROW Project was funded under the Australian Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training under the Research Information Infrastructure Framework for Australian Higher Education sponsored as part of the Commonwealth Government's Backing Australia's Ability.
