Career Choice Intentions of Gifted English as a Foreign Language (EFL) High School Students in Vietnam: A Mixed Method Study

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the career decision-making processes of gifted English as a Foreign Language (EFL) high school students in Vietnam. A multiple phase exploratory sequential mixed methods research design was used. In the first phase, interview data collected from 25 gifted EFL high school students were analysed using grounded theory to qualitatively develop initial models of the career decision-making processes of gifted EFL high school students in Vietnam (i.e., two alternative models associated with the formation of career choice intentions and one model associated with career indecision). In the second phase, questionnaire data collected from 512 gifted EFL high school students were analysed using structural equation modelling procedures to quantitatively test and refine the models developed in the first phase of the study. In the final third phase, the models developed in both of the earlier phases of the study were quantitatively re-tested and refined using questionnaire data collected from 602 gifted EFL high school students and structural equation modelling procedures, to allow for the identification of the optimal career decision-making process models. The finally accepted models demonstrated the importance of both personal and non-personal factors including career self-efficacy, family influence, career prospects, and multipotentiality in the career decision-making processes of gifted EFL high school students in Vietnam. The findings of the study may not only fill an important gap in the literature on the career decision-making processes of gifted EFL high school students in Vietnam, but also have important implications for the career counselling of these students.
